Male Circumcision: Is it Necessary to Cut the Frenulum?

Male circumcision is a procedure that more men are considering today. Whether driven by hygiene, a boost in confidence, or the need to treat medical issues like a tight foreskin (Phimosis) or chronic inflammation, it is a standard and safe surgery.

At Menness Clinic, one of the most common questions our specialists get is:

"If I get circumcised, do I need to have my frenulum cut as well?"

Circumcision is the surgical removal of part or all of the foreskin so that the glans (the head of the penis) is permanently exposed.

Men often choose this procedure to:

  • Minimize the accumulation of bacteria and odors (smegma).

  • Lower the chances of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and STIs.

  • Solving the problem of a tight foreskin (phimosis).

  • Improve confidence in daily hygiene and sexual health.

What is the "Frenulum" and how is it related to circumcision? The frenulum is the small, sensitive band of tissue located on the underside of the penis, connecting the glans to the foreskin. During a circumcision, the primary focus is the foreskin. A frenuloplasty (cutting or adjusting the frenulum) is not mandatory for every patient.

Our surgeons will only recommend a frenuloplasty if:

  • It is too tight or restrictive, causing pain during an erection.

  • The frenulum is too short (Frenulum breve), which can lead to tearing or discomfort.

It is normal to require a brief adjustment period in your daily routine immediately following the procedure. Once the wound has fully healed, the body adapts naturally. Circumcision does not negatively impact sexual sensation, nor does it decrease sexual performance or stamina.
