Understanding Common STDs
Gonorrhea:
A bacterial infection that often affects the reproductive tract, throat, and rectum. Symptoms can include painful urination and discharge, though many people are asymptomatic.
Chlamydia:
Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, it can lead to genital pain and discharge, and if untreated, may result in infertility.
Genital Herpes:
An infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) that leads to painful blisters or sores. The virus can remain dormant and reactivate over time.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus):
This virus weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight infections. Without treatment, it can progress to AIDS. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus):
A group of viruses with some strains causing genital warts or leading to cancers. Vaccines are available to protect against the more harmful strains.
Pubic Lice:
Also known as “crabs,” these parasites infest hair in the genital area, causing itching. They are treatable with medicated creams or lotions.
Syphilis:
A bacterial infection that progresses in stages. It begins with painless sores and, if untreated, can lead to serious health complications.
Trichomoniasis:
Caused by a protozoan parasite, it can lead to itching, burning, and unusual discharge, though many people show no symptoms.
Hepatitis B:
A viral liver infection that can become chronic and cause liver disease. It is preventable through vaccination.
